Meet (and pledge!) Jennifer Hurtubise, RN in Chemo and Emily Hurtubise, RN at CHEO.

Jennifer: I started my career in 2003, and I’ve been with CCH’s chemo unit since it opened in 2016. Being a chemotherapy nurse requires yearly recertification to stay up to date. In the beginning, we delivered just a few types of chemotherapy. Ten years later, we support a wide range of cancers, including: breast, bladder and prostate, lung, bowel, liver, pancreas, stomach, and esophageal.

We also provide select immunotherapy treatments and hormonal treatments for certain types of breast cancers. Our nurses have the same training as Ottawa staff. We’re passionate about what we do.

Emily: I graduated in 2025, and I’m proud to be a third-generation nurse. People who have been treated by my mom tell me how much they love her, how hardworking she is, and what a positive nurse she is. That inspires me. At CHEO I’m a float nurse, so every day is different. I don’t know where I’m going but I do know I’m going to help a kid that day.

Jennifer:

It’s hard to find someone who isn’t touched by cancer, but there’s hope. If you can have treatment, whether it’s chemo or immunotherapy, there’s always hope. Evolving treatments and immunotherapies will be lifechanging for a lot of people. The moment a patient rings the chemo bell is a huge motivational moment – not just for them, but for us too.

Emily: We’re excited to support local patients by participating in the show and it’s so much fun dancing with my mom. I danced competitively with Powell School of Dance for years, and mom danced growing up, too. Being back at the studio feels like going home.

What project are we dancing for?

We’re dancing for a mammography injector delivering biopsies for dense breasts, keeping patients in Cornwall instead of going to Ottawa, and new surgical equipment for women’s health. Emily’s godmother passed of breast cancer, and there are three daughters in our family, so this project means a lot to us.
